Discovering Statues, Serenity and Skeletons at USask.

A family visit to Saskatoon always involves a walk around the University of Saskatchewan to discover something new.

This trip I spent time enjoying the unique displays of the Sculpture Garden as well as the serenity of Boffin Gardens and some impressive dinosaur skeleton replicas.

Established in 1993 the Sculpture Garden is located near the Diefenbaker Centre. It can easily be reached by walking or biking along the Meewasin Trail…

and then finding your way above the river in the section between the University Bridge…

and the Railway Bridge.

The statues are made of a variety of materials including limestone, bronze and welded steel and overlook the scenic Saskatchewan River. Although some are starting to show their age because of the sun and weathering, they are well worth the visit.

Continuing on make your way to Innovation Blvd on the campus grounds and then follow it to Boffin Gardens. You may need to navigate with a map on your cell phone at this point…it can be a bit tricky to find if you are walking.

The gardens are definitely not large, but they provide a peaceful shady oasis in the summer and a sparkling winter wonderland when there is snow on the ground.

There is a gazebo that over looks the koi pond and plenty of tables and chairs to enjoy a picnic.

Surrounding the pond are numerous perennial plants and within the pond you will find water lilies and lotus blooms. There is also a small waterfall that feeds the pond.

To round out your day exploring the university campus head to the Museum of Natural Sciences Building. The Peter MacKinnon Building is located at the far end of the main Bowl area and the museum will be to your left.

The museum has two floors of exhibits with the most impressive being the replicas of a Stegosaurus, a Triceratops, and the ever popular Tyrannosaurus Rex. There are also glass displays with live reptiles and fish, as well as rocks and minerals. The museum is open daily and free to wander around.

I enjoyed my time exploring the campus and taking pictures. To check out tours that you can take on the University of Saskatchewan campus click here.

  1. I love visiting universities that offer guided campus tours as they provide insights into student life and the university’s history and architecture. One of the last ones I visited was Glasgow University in Scotland, and I was amazed by how much there was to see and do. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. I actually didn’t realize that universities offered tours and I think it’s a fantastic idea. I’d definitely look for that next time I’m close to one. Thanks for the comment.
