Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Located about 45 minutes south of Vancouver, just outside the village of Ladner, the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a year-round haven for a variety of bird species. Covering close to 850 acres, the sanctuary is one of the top ten bird-watching sites in Canada. The sanctuary can be enjoyed during any season, but my favourite time to visit is definitely autumn.

About 200 different varieties of birds call this place home for either part or all of the year, including species that make this destination a stopover on their long migrations heading north or south. In addition, approximately 100 birds have been spotted here on rare occasions. Many of the birds stay year-round and nest within the park including the stately Sandhill Cranes.

You can also spot the Great Blue Heron here, either resting like this one or flying overhead.

Wandering along the trails you will come across bird houses in different sizes and styles. Some for smaller birds and some larger ones for owls that use them for nesting.

In the fall you will be able to enjoy not only the bird-life that is found here, but the coloured leaves on the trees, and along the pathways.

There are plenty of ducks and geese, either swimming in the ponds and streams, or on the trails.

The variety of trees and plants that grow within the sanctuary provide not only nesting sites and shelter, but also food for the numerous birds.

There are also ponds and creeks for the many waterfowl that spend time here.

As you wander the trails, take your time and listen to the different birds as they fly amongst the bushes and trees, each species chirping their own unique song.
